We are able to assess and care for your pet at any life stage.
Preventive or wellness care is essential in helping your pet live their best life. When most people think of preventive care for their pets, they think of vaccines. While vaccinations are very important, there are actually four equally essential cornerstones of preventive care:
- Exams – At Urban Paw Veterinary Health & Rehabilitation, an exam is not just a complete physical examination and health assessment but an opportunity for your veterinarian to know and appreciate your pet as an individual. No two pets have the exact same lifestyle. Our veterinarians take the time to understand your pet and use this knowledge as the basis for medical recommendations. We recommend exams every 6 months.
- Lab Tests – Diagnostics like blood and urine tests help to determine if all body systems are functioning as they should. They also screen for genetic and breed-specific health issues and check for chronic conditions like kidney and liver disease. Early detection and treatment of chronic disease are critical to helping your pet live a long, healthy life with your family. Early management of chronic or age-related conditions is less costly and risky than emergency treatment once the disease progresses.
- Parasite Screening – Internal parasites can make your pet seriously ill, but fortunately, they are also easy to prevent. Once yearly heartworm testing, as well as twice-a-year intestinal screens, are recommended by the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) and our veterinarians. Preventive routine deworming against parasites such as roundworm, which can infect humans and cause serious illness, is important to your entire family’s health. We will help you choose the right preventive medicines tailored to your pet and lifestyle.
- Vaccines – Vaccinations are an easy way to protect your pet from life-threatening illnesses like distemper, while vaccines like rabies protect your whole family because rabies is fatal to both people and pets in your household.
Our team understands that surgery can be a source of anxiety for you and your family. That’s why it’s important to trust the people who will be taking care of your pet. Our experienced team of doctors and staff make it their number one priority to focus on pain management and patient safety. We use the most current surgical practices to ensure your pet receives the best veterinary care.
Just like with people, as our pets age, their care becomes more complicated. At Urban Paw, we do not accept that age alone is a reason for our furry loved ones “slowing down”. Many times, with a complete exam and screening tests, we can recommend small changes in care or lifestyle that will help keep your baby comfortable longer. Your dog or cat is considered geriatric at age 7 and Urban Paw’s geriatric exams are designed to:
- Help your pet live comfortably through their senior years.
- Recognize and control known health risks for older dogs and cats.
- Detect any signs of disease at their earliest symptom, when they are the most treatable.
Senior needs can be more complicated than those of our younger friends. A senior exam will involve detailed questions around lifestyle, mobility, diet, and comfort level at home. A complete exam and recommended screening tests will help our veterinarians make recommendations for your pet to help ensure they continue to live a happy and healthy life.
Just like us, our pets can have a hard time shedding some of those unwanted pounds. However, the data shows us that keeping our pets at a healthy weight can keep them with us longer. All the more reason to get those babies off the couch while you’re at work! Bring them in to us for fitness camp hours, and our trained staff will work them through a group exercise routine, including individual time on the water treadmill as long as there are no medical or behavioral reasons they cannot. Sign up for a fitness assessment to get started. We offer 5, 10, and 20 visits punch cards and online scheduling to allow for flexibility in getting your pet in for fitness days. It’s time for your pet to go from flab to fab!
Why is dental care so important? Recent studies have shown that 70% of adult cats and 80% of adult dogs show symptoms of oral disease. In fact, most pet parents are not away that their pet is dealing with dental issues. Bad breath, plaque build-up, excessive drooling, sore or bleeding gums when eating or chewing, and decreased appetite are signs that your pet’s teeth may require veterinary attention.
Just as it’s important for you to see a dentist regularly, it’s important for dogs and cats as well. Your pet’s oral health is directly connected to their overall health. Signs of dental disease include bad breath, loose, broken, or missing teeth, yellow or brown teeth, red, inflamed or bleeding gums, difficulty or pain when chewing, pawing at the mouth, and excessive drooling. If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact our team, and we’ll be happy to help.
AVMA, AAHA, and AVDC recommendations include yearly dental cleanings for all pets starting at one year of age. Consider that most of us do not brush our pets’ teeth, or if we do, we are only getting one surface. Compare this to humans, who brush twice daily and still are recommended to have our teeth professionally cleaned twice a year! “Dog breath” is not a normal thing and is an indicator of dental disease. This is why Urban Paw veterinarians perform oral exams and strongly recommend yearly dental cleanings for all pets.

Laser Therapy is a non-invasive therapeutic option that uses light to reach target tissue and has the potential to provide quick results. Laser Therapy can be used to promote healing for a variety of common conditions such as muscular pain, osteoarthritis, postoperative pain from incisions and wounds, and most situations involving musculoskeletal pain. Laser Therapy works by affecting tissue chemicals responsible for pain, inflammation, and nerve conduction; additionally, it increases microcirculation, cellular activity, and growth factors. The result is improved healing and tissue function and decreased discomfort.
